AITA for allowing not son to ask another kid’s parents replace a toy the kid broke

Not the A-hole

This is my first post, but I’ve read a lot of these and feel the need to ask. My husband and I are divided on this topic. Our son (8M) was given a remote control car for Christmas by my parents.

While he was playing with it outside, another child (10M) in the neighborhood came out to play with his also. The other child’s was drastically better and faster than our son’s. While they were playing the other child ran his car into my son causing him to fall and land on his own car. Which caused the car to break. Expectedly my son was upset and came to tell me about it.

Having not witnessed it myself I asked my nephew who was also playing with them what happened. When he verified what my son told me, I told my son that he needed to decide what he wanted to do about it and I would support him. He said he wanted to ask if they would replace the car or give him the cost of the car so he could replace it himself. Knowing my parents, I knew that the car would not have been expensive.

My son went to the child’s home and talked to the boy’s father and explained what happened. The boy’s father did not seem at all upset by the fact that my son was asking for what he did and looked at his own son and told him he needed to be more careful because his car was so much faster. He needed to have better control over it.

Since at that moment, we didn’t know how much my son’s car had cost. He asked if it would be OK to find out how much it cost and come back and let them know. The father said that was fine my son then went and asked his grandparents how much they spent on his remote control car and when he went back down to tell them that it was only $20 he was told that they had already found some thing and ordered it and that it would be here early next week.

My husband is now very upset with my son, asking for them to replace it, so I guess what I’m asking is AITA for allowing my son to do what he did by asking for a replacement?
