Due to popular demand, we have decided to re-do some of the sidebar AMAs in r/Drugs. The intention is that they will serve as a fantastic resource, with a particular focus on advice for first time users. Experienced users are generally a bit better at doing their own research.
So please, add any questions you think would generate good answers, taking care to keep any answers on topic. This is more about information that anything else, so please report dangerously incorrect information and anything else that's out of place.
Try to ask and answer questions which are relevant to all psychedelics.
I hope that this FAQ will serve as a great resource for anyone planning to use psychedelics or looking for information about the experience.
First use: It is not known when psychedelics were first used. They were mostly unknown in the modern west until the 20th century, but there is evidence of use amongst south american civilisations in the sixteenth century as well as theories that psilocybin mushrooms may have played a role in the emergence of religion.
Current research into medical applications: Psychedelics are being investigated for a number of medical uses, including treatments for depression, PTSD and end-of-life anxiety.
Legality: Most psychedelics are immediately moved into the highest penalty class by governments banning them. Some are able to escape bans through their obscurity and can be found for sale on grey market websites.
