Umbilical hernia repair

Hi everyone,

I have a small umbilical hernia (<1cm) and was looking at the available surgery options. It looks like open mesh surgery is the recommended choice for a specialist clinic in the country.

Does anyone have experience with this? I was wondering how big the incision usually is, whether it affects the appearance of the belly button and how visible the scar usually is after it has faded?

Is there a reason to opt for laparoscopic instead? If not, is no mesh/suture repair worth it?

I’m a fit male in my mid twenties if relevant.
