Planning a trip to Cape Scott Provincial Park but looking for advice.

It looks like a very remote region to get to.

Are the roads there pretty decent?
Do I need to book anything in advanced?
Is the best place to stay Port Hardy?
Where are the best parts to check out?
Are dogs ok to bring?
Should I be worried about bears and cougars?

I've been talking about doing this trip for years but have never gotten around to it. Please give advice on how to make an epic road trip.
