Novice sharpener advice

I’ve been practicing freehand sharpening for a few months I’m using a king 1000 and 6000 and strop with green compound I can smoothly cut paper and push cut paper standing on edge but still can’t cut a paper towel smoothly What do I need to get to the next level?
Do I need loupes to look at my scratch pattern, burr etc TIA
