Who have created mesoamerican reptiles-human?

I mean. When someone is creating reptile like civilizations in fantasy they are often creating them in mesoamerican style. Inca, Aztec, Mayan, etc. For examples: Lizardmen from Warhammer, Argonians from TES, Fortress from HoMMIII. I know it's looks really cool, I love mesoamerican style. But I have a question: "Who first started using mesoamerican reptiles?" Like. Elfs, Hobbits and Orcs was created by Tolkien. Orcs have a Mongolian/Turkic style. Elfs have a Celtic (for Wood Elfs) or Fantasy Baroque (for High Elfs). It was created by Tolkien. But who first created reptile-like mesoamericans?
