AITA for not wanting to attend my cousins wedding?
Me and my cousin had a fall out a few months ago (she was shutting me out and then ended up flaking on some major plans which I had spent alot of money on). She reached out to me 2 days before New Year to apologies. Without going into details her apology seemed a bit and calculated. It seemed almost scripted and she also tried to gaslight me.
On New Year day she asked me to call her. On the phone she announced that she was getting married, initially I was very happy for her but then it hit me. She probably just apologised because she wanted to make the announcement and also I would have been a seat to fill at her wedding in the grand scheme of things.
Some other things pissed me off too.
1.) Given that we were so close (10+ year friendship) prior to our fall out a few months ago she never once mentioned any guy and theres no way he came out of thin air.
2.) She told me and my parents that it was a guy she had been seeing from a dating app but then she told my uncle that it was an arranged marriage with some religious scholar that her mom found. Before anyone goes off, I know that my uncle knows the truth because theres no hiding the religious scholar thing from my uncle and his family as they all live in the same country and people know each other. In our case we live international so we wouldn't technically have ever found out. Keep in mind my other cousin married a religious scholar kind of guy last summer and during that time my cousin used to roast her so much but ended up doing the same thing?
3.) For the bants I asked her for a pic of the guy just to see who my closest cousin was marrying, she completely ignored me. I mentioned it again and told her if she's not comfortable sharing thats fine she can just say. She replied that she would send pics on the day of the engagement. I felt like she was paranoid that I would give her evil eye since her family is obsessed with it (that offended me).
4.) As someone who cared about her I was happy at first and was trying to actively show interest by asking her how the guy proposed like did he take her abroad, get her a nice ring etc but her response was so cold. She said it was just a "process" no ring was given to her, he did no proposal it was just "we met, then parents met, then we are going to marry". I know her and her mom were super thirsty to get her married off so I dont really think she is being forced or anything.
5.) She was like my best friend but when it came to this she shut me out? She could have made up with me in November then announced this in Jan and i dont think i would have been as annoyed as I would have felt her apology was sincere. It all just really hurts, she approached and handled it badly imo. IDK why she would lie so much about the guy as well. I feel really betrayed and confused. Also I feel annoyed that she shit talked my other cousin so much only to end up copying her. So AITA for being mad about this all and not wanting to attend her shotgun wedding?
*to clarify her mom and dad may have arranged for her to meet the guy initially but she isnt being forced into this by her response from the other day. I just dont know why she had to lie and say it was a guy from an app??
