Want me to use my light? You got it!

So I (23F) worked retail for about 4 years and just recently quit in September 2022. I have a lot of stories both good and bad from my time there, but I've been wanting to tell this story for a while.

So, in 2021, I think, my workplace got green lights at the registers, and we manually have to turn on and off every time we had a customer. I found it incredibly annoying and having them is unnecessary; espeically since no one ever looks up to see them on. So I never used the light. Instead, I would yell out or motion the customer (if they can easily see me) to come into my line. I find it easier and quicker this way.

However, some of my managers and some coworkers who acted like the boss thought otherwise. They would often tell me I need to use my light, even though no one ever looks to see who's open. Want me to use my light? Okie dokie! I would comply, turn on my light, and then continue to yell out for the next customer.

My thought process was "well you told me to turn on the light. You never said I couldn't stop yelling." I considered myself a smartass for just finding loopholes into what they wanted me to do.

One time I did get told to stop yelling out to customers; even though I wasn't the only one doing it. I was annoyed but complied thinking "they can't get mad at me for not getting customers because they told me I wasn't allowed to yell out". I should also note that I was at the register furthest away from the line. So yea I would literally stand there and wait until someone notices I can take them.

We also have "next" signs and sometimes I would get told to use my light and my sign. Ok. I did both of them and still yelled I could help the next person.

Unfortunately, they never got the hint that I would still continue to yell out even if they say to use my light. When they weren't getting on me about it, I simply didn't use my light. But ThEy WeReN't SpeCiFiC eNoUgH tO sAy I cAn'T yElL.

I know this isn't the most clever or genius malicious compliance, but I figured this belong here since technically I did exactly what they told me. Sooo...I don't even feel bad about it
