The lady at the front office of my son's school got mad at me for this...
So my son forgot a few things he needed today, so I, as his father, came to the school to give it to him. When the lady saw this, she immediately got mad at me, because apparently by me bringing his stuff, my son won't learn to remember it another time.
I said to her: "My son has ADHD. The worst treatment for an executive dysfunction disorder is shame, so will you please let me do what's best for my son, thanks!"
School is hard enough for him already. Should I try to make it worse, heck no! Then she went on about how he is going to take care of himself, when I am no longer there to help him out anymore.
Well, it might be awful for him, just like it was for me. But I found that getting yelled at didn't help at all, in fact I still forgot the same things - just like my son. And getting yelled at did in fact make it worse.
So as far as I see it, my son has an entire lifetime to "hate himself". And in case he experiences what I did, I can at least delay that by making sure he has the tools he needs to do well in school.
Later on, I was a bit unsure if I did the right thing. A few guys on the Humans Anonymous app stood by me in this case, but I'm genuinely curious to hear your opinions on this?
