What questions should I ask a lawyer in a consult for a divorce involving immigration?
I'm young and inexperienced in legal processes and am not getting much help from family. Yes this is my mess to clean up but even just a consult costs over $100 and I want to be sure I'm asking everything I need to. I was a student at the time so a family member sponsored a foreigner to come here and we got married. He was extremely abusive and manipulative and it took me nearly 3 years to get out of the relationship. I was 20 years old and it was my first relationship and I made a lot of stupid decisions.
He went back to his country and I know he's chronically unemployed and living in poverty there. He will never have the money to afford a plane ticket to come back to the US let alone hire a lawyer to pursue any legal action against me. We have no contact and I have no way of knowing where he is or how to find him.
My main goal is for him to have no claim to anything I have financially. I funded everything 100% for the entire time he was here and on top of the abuse I suffered I'm just tired of it and don't want him to get another penny out of me. As it stands I have no assets in my name like a car or house and we had no children or purchased anything together. He refused to work but of course I had a job. He did not provide any other support inside or outside the home he was literally useless. He refused jobs my friends and family gave him. He refused to drive here despite me providing him a car. I don't want him getting any of my income.
I appreciate all your help.
