Are movie sequels usually terrible.
In my 20+ years as an anime fan, I don't think I've seen a good anime movie that serves as a sequel and mostly conclusion to an anime tv series.
I mean look at:
Lelouch of The Resurrection
The Blood C The Last Dark
Conquer of Shamballa
Prince of Darkness.
"Gundam Narrative" kind of.
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children if you want to throw it in.
They all suffer from a lot of the same problems. Too little time, too many cameos or need to fit every surviving character. Yet, even more importantly not enough time to really develop the new villains, characters, or plot.
Conquer supposdly had lots of story that was cut and its believable as the new villains are so whatever that it really drags the movie down. Lelouch to me gets it's main goals down, but I think the need to show every surviving character wastes to much time and this whole new enemy fraction is poorly developed. Nadesico is another prime example, most of the movie is them recruiting the original cast for seemingly nothing in the end. To get Yuri to mars to hack the enemy. Meanwhile the subplot that people want to know about is undeveloped and unresolved. I guess Blood C's problem to me is I just wanted Saya to take her revenge and in action glory and instead its Clamp as fuck.
Do these movies ever work?
