Worried I’m in over my head

Professional Question

Thanks in advance for any insight or guidance anyone has.

Just started my first GIS job as the GIS coordinator for a small county. I am 1 of 1 for this department. They have been super helpful in getting me up to speed on what they currently have and what they need in the form of needs assessments from consulting firms.

For the most part I think I can handle what will be required of me in terms of my technical responsibilities however some of the stuff is definitely over my head like SQL server administration, scripting in both Python and JavaScript (I can automate simple tasks in python and have some experience with JavaScript), and other more computer science related tasks. I am no GIS architect when it comes to creating and designing servers / databases but this is what will be required at some point it seems through the recommendations of the needs assessment.

Those that hired me are aware of my limitations (no professional experience but years of schooling both grad and undergrad for GIS) but I’m worried I will let them down. Part of this feels like impostor syndrome but part of it also feels legitimate. They know I don’t check all the boxes but they hired me anyway so I guess we will work through it together? I was honest about things I didn’t know when they asked but they didn’t prod too much when it came to the CS side of the job. They did mention we have technical help on call if we need it from one of the GIS firms but I don’t want to lean into that more than I should.

There’s nothing I can’t learn along the way but I don’t want to slow anyone down. Any insight? I’m shitting myself. Thanks!
