AITA for only inviting 2 people to our wedding?

Not the A-hole

My boyfriend (27m) and I (25f) have been together for almost 8 years. We’ve put off getting married due to life changes and the hopes that one day we’ll be these perfect versions of ourselves that deserve to get married. (Lol)

Finally, I just said let’s do it and we started planning our wedding. We’d like to have it in a self uniting state so we can book a chalet in the mountains and be done with it.

We’d only need 2 people to be there as witnesses for our marriage. Which is not ideal (we’d like to just be us, but it’s not a huge deal that there has to be witnesses.)

Our families are very toxic and manipulative. My partner’s family is racist and has called me racist things. Every time they have an issues with their son, they take it out on me. It’s safe to say they’ve hurt me deeply over the years.

My partner has always sided with me and because of his family’s actions we have switched to LC/NC

The only members of either of our families that we talk to is my mom and brother. My partner and I both agreed that we’d prefer to just have them there as witnesses so that we don’t have to deal with the extra drama from the rest of our families.

Delivering this news was obviously not great.

Immediately I was attacked and accused of pushing them out. “What kind of loser only wants 2 people at their wedding.” We won’t see our son get married. It’s all my fault their son hates them… etc etc.

My partner and I feel guilty for not considering their feelings about being their to see him get married, but I also feel justified in my choice to not have them there.

We’re very confused and mentally exhausted with this already.

AITA?

Tl;dr we’re only inviting my mom and brother to our wedding. BF’s family didn’t take it well
