Makeup and scalp treatment recommendations?
so I’m a female that’s been struggling with HS for the past two years and was just recently diagnosed. I’ve been on high dose spironolactone, and just started doxycycline by the derm who finally diagnosed me. I also started using benzoyl peroxide wash and adaptalene gel, which seem to help some. I might consider humira or infliximab in the future. I’d like to get laser hair removal at some point too.
Although I get HS in my armpits and groin, my worst lesions have always been on my face and scalp, particularly my jawline, chin, cheeks, along my hairline, and the sides/back of my scalp. I’m very self conscious about these spots, and don’t feel confident unless I can cover them with makeup. However, whenever I apply concealer or foundation, the ingrown hairs and keratin debris from my spots surface, completely messing up my makeup coverage and just create even worse texture. Does anyone else with HS who wears makeup experience this? Has anyone found makeup products that seem to cause less of this than others? Are there certain foundations/ concealers that have non-toxic ingredients that are better for HS skin? Please, no one say to just not wear makeup, as that’s not an option for me. I already RARELY wear makeup as I’m at home most days, but when I leave the house I need to cover my spots otherwise I feel terrible and dysphoric.
Additionally, I get chronic occlusion of the hair follicles on my scalp, which causes severe matting of my hair to my scalp, and makes it very difficult to wash my hair without ripping some of it out. I use ketoconazole mixed with head and shoulders for shampoo as recommended by my derm. I’d like to find a pre-wash scalp treatment, as I’ve used them in the past and they seem to help, but a lot of them contain toxic ingredients. My derm recommended something with tea tree oil. Does anyone else with long hair struggle with this issue as well? And has anyone found a non toxic scalp treatment , oil, or exfoliant that works?
Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance for any advice and recommendations!
