Teen’s room and boundaries

Advice

Okay all, I need some advice. My 14 year old’s room is beyond. I don’t expect perfect cleanliness, but this morning, I passed their closed door and the smell! I opened the door and the smell made me gag.

Clean and dirty clothes all over, dirty dishes, candy wrappers, an open package of cookies on the floor, a wet towel on the carpet…it was BAD. I mean, I’m not the most fastidious person. I don’t dust a lot, and sometimes there are dishes left in the sink for a day or two. But messy is different than dirty, if that makes sense.

I’ve tried gentle reminders, going in and taking out the dirty dishes, yelling (I was frustrated). Today I texted them and told them about the smell — they claimed they had cleaned last night and taken out the trash, which is clearly not true.

I am this close to cleaning their room for them, but honestly don’t think it’s the best move. I plan on banning food in their room, but is there anything else I can do?

And before anyone says something about I should have taught them about this stuff earlier, they’ve only been living with my husband (their dad) and me for a little over a year.
