Am I (31F) overreacting about my mom's (59F) birthday?
My(31f) mother(59f) hurt me yet again.
It's my mother's 60th birthday in a few months and she says I am overreacting by being hurt that she wants to spend her birthday in Italy with my cousin(29f). I'm her only daughter.
She's never liked me. She told me she loves me but she doesn't like me. I'm not a bad person to her. She has never really liked me or my brother and we really aren't bad people. We both have had anxiety and I've have depression but I have long spells of being okay. We both work, no trouble with the law and try to treat people well.
I just don't get it. Everyone else always had a mother that they could get their nails done with, talk to about boys etc. She was always very heavy handed with us and extremely bad tempered. She worked very hard and she has a lot of friends so there was never any quality time with us.
I've mended the relationship as much as possible and just accepted that I missed out greatly on a mothering relationship growing up but thought there was no point in staying stuck in the past so that we couldn't get on now, so I've tried to do more with her lunches etc. although it usually involves my auntie and others cousins or she isn't interested.
I told her I'm hurt.
She says I'm overreacting. Am I?
