Early game loot Tetris is 50% of the gameplay.

But as we progress we start to give items homes, but it's still handy to use the auto sort button. I personally like a gap at the top followed by my storage containers, with my bags and rigs at the bottom.

Adding the ability to right click an item and lock its position/lock the squares themselves would give you a good mix of using the sort and giving items a permemnant position.
