Almost recruited into an MLM
TL;DR(Parents signed us up for Amway without knowing, sister and I almost recruited into this MLM to be less anti-social.)
New to reddit, throwaway for obvious reasons.
Recently my aunt and uncle approached my parents about a good opportunity for my sister and I to get out of our shell and talk to other smart young people our age. They sold my parents on a place where we could be with other young people talking about business. We weren't told about all of this until after they agreed that we will join. Couple of days after that my aunt is texting my mom to give her an email through which she can communicate with us and when will we be available for the meeting. I decided to text her that we might not want to be a part of it not knowing it was an MLM. She said if it was ok for me to just attend the first meeting so that we can start learning with our cousin who was also dragged into it. We agreed we were put in a video call with our aunt and her "mentor". Honestly after the first meeting my sister and I were sold on the fact that we could start "earning money as we sleep", that we could retire our parents, help out our siblings, and live a stress free life. We actually though that we would be learning about business for free, oh how wrong we were. We were given the task of reading the book before the weekend ended, we thought that it was quite tedious so I looked for an audio book on YouTube and once I did I found a video from 4 years ago of a young man saying that the book was from an Amway scam. I showed to my sister an we felt so disappointed.
Sure enough the book was talking about network marketing which is another word for MLM based on the research I decided to do on my own. After discussing it with my sister we went to tell our parents. Both of them said that they new they were signing us up for a pyramid scheme but they told my aunt and uncle they just wanted us to learn about business and not sell anything. I knew that was BS because they told our other sister who isn't much younger than us that they didn't sign her up for the opportunity because she is immature and dumb. Later after finding out about the scheme they want to say how she wasn't recruited because she knows how to outsmart people and isn't as nice as we are. We decided that since we are old enough to make decisions without our parents. The second meeting came around the mentor is telling us about how much her and her children are earning how her and her husband are practically retired and and trying to sell us more BS. We are not confrontational so we sit in that meeting for an hour.
Low and behold we have been assigned another book apparently this was less boring and more like a story book. We didn't get to read it because we decided to text the aunt who tried to recruit us that we were not interested in joining an MLM at the moment. We tried to put her down as nice as we could. She didn't text back until the next morning implying that maybe our parents didn't wants us to be doing this again we told her that this was our decision. We had already discussed it with our parents who seemed upset that we were throwing away a good learning opportunity and that we are not going to the conference that is being held today. After turning her down for the second time she understood that we didn't want anything to do with MLM. The thing is neither the mentor or her had told us exactly how they were earning this money. She also didn't deny it being an MLM. We can down to the conclusion that it was Amway because this specific aunt has been selling Amway products for same amount of time she said she had met her mentor.
I partially think it's my fault on being sucked into an MLM because my parents are upset at the fact that I haven't gone to college even though I already graduated high school. Although we haven't been diagnosed or seen a therapist both my sister and I have signs of depression and Social anxiety disorder. We know this because we have an aunt who is now on antidepressants. Our parents believe more in the supernatural than mental health. Sorry for this long story/rant but I really needed to get this off my chest and advice if my sister and I did the right thing on turning down this "opportunity". Thank you for reading this far.
