Which medical school would you choose?
UTMB
Pros:
- P/F grading during pre-clerkship
- NBME exams
- Awesome research opportunities
- I currently have a friend who’s an upperclassmen
- Very collaborative and laid back class
- Beach!
Cons:
- Limited food/grocery options
- Not ranked as high
- Admin isn’t great
McGovern
Pros:
- Texas Medical Center (MD Anderson)
- Summer research program/opportunities
- Higher ranked
- Way better food/grocery options
Cons:
- Only the first semester is P/F with in-house exams, the remainder of pre-clerkships are H/HP/P/F
- Horrible/expensive parking
Both:
- About the same distance from home
- Around the same tuition
- Have AOA (although UTMB might be becoming more holistically-based)
Background info: Right now, I think I’m wanting to go into a surgical specialty. I prefer UTMB since it’s P/F, and it has a beach (which is better than no beach for me). I don’t know if McGovern’s rank/prestige and access to the TMC truly outweighs it not having P/F. Thoughts? I would love to hear what you guys thinks overall.
