Today, a general strike begins in Peru. The workers are protesting the recent US coup and demanding freedom for Pedro Castilo and a new constitution and elections.
Ever since the December 2022 coup, massive protests have been raging in Peru, as leftist parties and, most importantly, the labor unions, Castillo's stronghold, are protesting the coup and political imprisonment of President Castillo. Now they are also organizing a general strike, beginning today.
In response, the US installed coup government of Dina Boluarte has declared martial law, which implies suspending constitutional rights like free speech and freedom of assembly and gives the authority to the military and police to inspect homes without a warrant, and sent in the military to suppress the protests by force (how democratic). Right now violent clashes are happening between strikers and the military and police in the streets of Peru.
And ofc, what are western liberals doing? Calling for "peaceful protests" and denouncing the "violent radical protests", acting in accord with the peruvian right wing and the peruvian military, which have been organizing recently "peace marches" in which they call for "an end to violent protests", a nice way of saying "ban protesting against the coup". Liberals can never stop pandering to imperialism can they?
Support to the peruvian people in their national liberation struggle! Libertad para Pedro Castillo!
A great video by The Grayzone on the protests:
