Worth it in California?

I’ve been doing quite a bit of distance driving in California and have more planned for this year. I use Waze all of the time but have considered getting a radar detector for extra piece of mind even though I don’t go balls to the walls with speed.

Are radar detectors worth it in California? I wouldn’t want to drop a ton of money only for it to become obsolete.
