Is it hard to dye white denim?

I got some white bell bottoms I like recently and the fit was perfect on them. I wanted to see if there were blue ones from the same company but there weren’t any that were cut the same in blue, so I was wondering if maybe I could get another white pair and just dye it that blue jeans color?

My mother who has some experience with dyeing clothes said that white denim doesn’t take dye well, and I just wasn’t sure why that would be. I was wondering just how true that was?
