Iran's loss is our gain, but it is sad that it comes through Faghani not being able to express his views openly without being persecuted.

A lot of Iranian athletes / notable figures have defected from Iran in recent times because the government treat their people like shit - the country has lost many talented people due to the regimes actions.

What's equally exciting is that Jarred Gillett had been nominated for England. When he moved to England (to continue his post PhD research in biomechanics for children with Cerebral Palsy as you do) he essentially gave up his FIFA listing and had to start again from the bottom. I think Faghani and Gillet are the first two referees to be nominated by two different countries which is pretty cool.

Jarred Gillet was maybe the best ref this country has ever had. Alex King isn’t far behind him though.

But we now have Faghani!

Nah I'm pretty sure it's because he wasn't eligible for Iran to nominate him anyway.

From the FIFA directive:

When nominating a candidate, member associations shall observe the following conditions:

e) The proposed match officials shall have officiated regularly at matches at the highest level in the member association of their country for at least two years.

I'm sure that Iran didn't want to nominate him for the reasons in the tweet but they couldn't even if they did. Same reason why we couldn't nominate Gillett once he moved and why he had to go from the bottom of the English pyramid back up.

I was surprised Iran was allowed to continue to list him after he arrived here

I truly feel for anyone who can't express themselves freely in these sort of countries. It's a shame that strict regimes like this still exist in 2022.

Anyway, this is a benefit for Australian football as he is a very accomplished ref. Proud to call him our own.

Just the other day I was just reading his interview from last month. A good read:

Migrant journey: How Australia became home for World Cup referee Alireza Faghani

Our current crop of referees is one of the best ever. Gone are the days of Mark Shields, Ben Williams or Strebre Delovski ruining matches

Its good not having referee's as the centre of conversation every week but hopefully we havent jinxed that now. Always room for controversy with Beathcake and KGJ telling each other they are wrong on a VAR decision.

Chris Beath has been a lot more annoymous lately so if he’s making mistakes we aren’t seeing them. Being a ref isn’t easy so I’m always willing to give them the benefit of the doubt

Looks at list...

Kurt Ams and Shaun Evans are there

Elder has made a very poor start to his career

.........

I mean they can’t all be superstars but they make less mistakes than refs from 2005-2017. Remember Kris Griffiths-Jones? He stole a wage because he learned how to use VAR tech before everyone else

Ams and Evans are some of the worst refs i've ever seen in my life, just concede you're not correct.

VAR often bails out refs these days or puts the focus on the VAR.

That ginger donkey Ams is just as bad in VAR as on the field, where he constantly makes inconsistent calls, uses yellow cards poorly, lets the game get out of control by ignoring fouls and not booking players, then calling phantom fouls and fouls the wrong way, and makes ridiculously inaccurate judgements in important moments. I'm not even kidding when I say most local refs could do as well if not better.

And Evans is the most arrogant ref I've ever seen in Australia, he thinks he's the gold standard and carries himself with a terribly up himself demeanour. He needs to humble himself and realise he's not even a mediocre ref, let alone a superstar who needs the attention on himself

You obviously weren't watching at the start when Shield was refereeing....

Please dont talk like this, its silly. This is a subjective discussion.

I'll take Elder anyday over Ben Williams.

In conclusion, your comment is off base

I know they're the best ever because Ams and Beath are the only two I tend to reliably remember exist, and I only remember Beath for being an egomaniac, not for being bad at his job. An invisible referee is a good referee.

I've come to like this bloke as an A-League referee but his performance in the 2015 Asian Cup final and our 2017 playoff against Syria will forever live in my memory... and not in a good way.

Man booked Robbie Kruse for diving when he'd done his achilles ffs.
