What is the core issue in Edmonton?
Hey Oilers fans, Boston fan (from Canada) here coming respectfully in peace!
I'm a huge fan of the game, and one thing I really like to do is look at other teams outside of my own fandom. Given that I am Canadian (and as a Boston fan, Montreal Toronto and Vancouver reaaally aren't up my alley), Edmonton has always been one of those teams that I've said "yeah, it would be pretty cool if they won".
The Oilers have the undisputed best player in the league in McDavid, and another top 5 player in Draisaitl (where he falls in that top 5 is up for debate, but I think its totally fair to say). I've also really liked how some of the supporting players like Nugent-Hopkins, Hyman, and Kane (prior to injury) have come in and given the team more of an identity up front.
Now, I understand goaltending has been an issue for a while, and Campbell isn't exactly living up to expectations this season. But with McDavid (73pts in 39 games) and Draisaitl (58pts in 37 games) at the helm, its still a bit surprising to see them battling for a wild card spot. I know offense isn't everything, but these numbers are out of this world GOOD.
I've always been a bit underwhelmed by their bottom 6 forward group, to me they don't seem like the "get it done" type of guys like we saw in Tampa Bay or Colorado the last few years as they've gone on to win Stanley Cups (imo: in order to win, you need a productive bottom 6 that can play in both ends of the rink). And I know the defense group has also been a bit "meh" over the last number of years. I like Nurse, but to me he isn't a standout #1 guy. I think Bouchard is growing into an awesome player as well, but I don't know if he's got bonifide #1 status either (again, like Makar in COL or Hedman in TB). The type of guy you can lean on every night to play huge minutes and play against the other team's top guys reliably.
Anyways..
TL;DR
I am curious as to what Oilers fans think of their team, I know frustration must be building a little bit with the high caliber players they have but lack of sustained success. I've always wanted to see them do well. I am a bit surprised at their current placement in the standings this year.
