Why are so many people barefoot in sacred art?

I was walking around a catholic school’s campus the other day and I noticed in a lot of the paintings and statues the people depicted didn’t have shoes on or their feet were covered by a robe and you can’t tell either way but rarely did I see sandals or any type of shoe. Is there a reason for this? If so what is the significance?
