does the stray dog randomly disappear for everyone or do I have bad luck?

This has happened in every playthrough where I've had the stray dog, both on ps3 (both the original release and LE) and now on PC. No other pet disappears like this, it's just the damn stray dog. Sometimes when you enter a place, the dog will have disappeared, and you have to reload a save. Obviously I don't always notice that the dog is missing, so it kinda just ends up getting lost forever.
