AITA for buying my daughter something to keep her multicultural snacks in that her evil greedy cousins kept stealing? BTW my daughter is perfect in EVERY way. Did I mention that?

God, I can't stand it when people come up with bizarrely sentimental/meaningful explanations for trivial behavior that doesn't need an explanation. Oh, I was all set to say your daughter is TA for being upset that people are stealing food she bought to eat and enjoy--but then you said she bought it to expand her horizons and learn Japanese from reading the wrappers? Well that changes everything!

I'm just imagining the daughter visiting Japan for the first time and trying to find her way around by saying, ”Pocky? Pocky pocky! Wasabi peas pocky!"

Exactly, like I don't care why the cousins feel free to eat the food the daughter buys, or why the daughter doesn't want her cousins to eat them.

They should be asking first and accepting that the daughter might not want to share!

48
MiniBeanies•

I can't help but think it'd be more interesting if they'd at least hint at that being some justification to the parents so they'd allow her to have "exotic" snacks that she liked and was buying with her own money

Don't forget that she's skinny and fit so that means she's justified in wanting an occasional nice snack that she ordered with her own money!

This one’s so great! Questions:

  1. does everyone on aita have eating disorders?, posters and commenters both? There’s rampant eating other people’s food, getting lockboxes for food, tricking people into eating certain food, stockpiling food, etc.

1.5) if it’s a sign of the times, can we get some gardening-related aita’s at least? Those would be super entertaining.

  1. the snacks here from elsewhere is sus as far as reasoning: “she’s trying to broaden horizons and is linguistically gifted and learning from labels” - has the daughter just figured out a loop hole?!, like who pays for these snacks that take weeks to get?

  2. why doesn’t the OOP just move his family to a multi-cultural city asap, then the snacks could be bought within blocks and the crime cousins wouldn’t be a problem anymore.

AITA for terrifying my plants into growing?

I (ageless, Fallen angel) go as far as putting the slackers down the garbage disposal and leaving the pot in the plant room as an example to the rest of them. They are the most verdant houseplants in the city. My boyfriend (ageless, angel [retired])thinks I'm going overboard and I'd have better results being nice to them. But I remind him I am a demon and nice is just a four-letter word. Still I have to wonder if I'm in the wrong here. AITA for not treating my plants nicely?

I would so get banned for shitposting. 😂

I believe in the book at least, Aziraphale and Crowley have very precise ages, c. 6000 years. Not sure if that carried into the Amazon series.

16
The_Serpent_Of_Eden_She died and still refuses to acknowlege me •

I think that's just how long they've been on Earth, but everyone's headcanon is different and that's just as valid.

3
Loud_Insect_7119•

This is convenient because I just finished reading that book, and I think you are correct. Crowley was a part of the rebellion that created Hell (it's clear on that, he wasn't a true believer so much as he just hung out with the wrong crowd and vaguely sauntered downward rather than falling), which happened some unspecified amount of time prior to the events in the Garden of Eden (which in turn happened about 6,000 years ago).

That said, yeah, I don't think it really matters.

3

You teach your fucking plants! The nerve of them. Hope they realize the alternative is the orphanage. (Aka buy nothing/Craigslist free/ gifts to others/ sidewalk with “free” sign until you relinquished and took pity and took them back in.) Also gotta be equal not fair- no wait it’s fair not equal- in your treatment of plants so none of them ostracize/kill the others (scapegoats) bc they know they’re golden child. Ok but seriously I plant seeds so I don’t have to thin out/kill anything, instead only fill in!

8
randomsilverdIn witness protection bc of 2ndhand embarrassment•

Ok here are my quick fly attempts:

  1. own garden: I really like this one plant. It’s inside, it’s outside. When it’s inside I eat it. I’ve actually destroyed it. I do have fur and cutes but I bite the plant. Aita? I’m a cat btw.
  2. community garden: I do every volunteer work day except for 1x bc I danced to salsa all day/night. No not to jalapeños tomatoes etc or about the final salsa product, only to salsa music, aita? Yes I think salsa music is better than salsa the dip food. Duh.
6
CrazyhellgaI reserve my right to judge and be judged•

Sure. How about “I planted tomatoes and they would disappear as soon as they ripened, I blamed squirrels and then I noticed neighbors taking them” and the like.

Pretty sure there was one in the last couple days about “we planted a garden on common ground and my neighbors now take so much I don’t have enough for myself, I asked them to take less and they say I shouldn’t have planted in common ground”.

Reading labels. That one is funny. As someone who speaks five languages and can more or less understand another dozen or so to the extent of labels on household products, I found label reading hilarious as a preteen and teen, so that part I can believe. But it’s not a sign of linguistic ability and doesn’t help build up language knowledge whatever OOP may think.

19
randomsilverdIn witness protection bc of 2ndhand embarrassment•

Yeah I wanna hear community garden aita’s, or own garden with aita ?s, would be especially funny since gardeners are known for sharing and working together, and also community gardens can start up where there’s no legal rights to. A lot of levels to work with there as far as work done, food, sharing, legality, ownership, community, etc, oh and recipe chime-ins. Very cool you know so many languages so NTA unless you learned languages from reading snack labels lol like this teen may or may not be convincing her dad to get so she can learn. As an aside if true I id w the teen, I mean hello, food and languages?!, yes

7
DiegoIntrepid•

The reason why we don't get those is that they can't generate the outrage of the others.

  1. This poor child, she works hard to buy snacks from all over the world, and waits weeks for them, only for her cousins to snatch them and gobble them down.
  2. Evil Vegan. Need I say more?
  3. Boundary stomping roommate who is constantly eating the more expensive options in the fridge, even after being told not to, should I put exlax in the food? Or *insert current hottest pepper* into my food? Or I know they are lactose intolerant, should I buy regular milk and put it in an old lactose free milk bottle? (ie revenge fantasy)
  4. Parents controlling the food allows them to complain about parents and bring out their armchair diagnosing about EDs and unhealthy relations with food, and allows them to share *THEIR* stories about their evil parents and how they went on a binge after they got out.

But, garden sharing? Most of these people probably have never been close enough to a vegetable/fruit bearing plant to identify them :P It doesn't allow them to feel the rage the others do, or diagnose any of the participants with anything, or share their own stories of having their neighbor break down their door while they are gone so they can get to the tomato plants they always brought inside, to prevent theft.

12
randomsilverdIn witness protection bc of 2ndhand embarrassment•

Or:

  1. teen triangulates family and gets special snacks delivered so she can learn languages
  2. no meat/dairy = beans veg rice fruit oat herb spice etc
  3. everyone should earn enough $ even in $6K/mo rent to have no roommates
  4. teens on Reddit are still getting over when their mom said no to McDonalds 2 nights ago

Lol agree you’re right most haven’t been near a plant and a gardening aita wouldn’t get traction- but it would be so entertaining tho!

3
CrazyhellgaI reserve my right to judge and be judged•

Every year for twenty years my Mom has been passing tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchinis all around the neighborhood :). So yeah.

And no I didn’t learn languages from labels. I would be speaking really funny if I did. Some labels and especially some instructions use godawful automatic translation…

We legitimately had a lemon tree bordering the sidewalk of our front yard. My parents generally didn’t care if people picked a few walking by, and since we were on a common route to the elementary school, kids would pull them for no reason. Had more than we needed so it never mattered. They’d even see some person taking a few and offer them a plastic grocery bag to hold them, and those people would sometimes come to the door the next time to ask. Parents always said sure. But then my dad or mom, don’t remember, came home to a guy standing on the roof of his car to pick lemons from the top (might have been the end of the season and the only yellow ones were up there?) and that pissed them off.

I got one: "AITA for using pesticides in on my garden? Today I made dinner for my parents and sister. My sister is big on organics. blah blah filler here. She found out I used pesticides on my produce, freaked out, claimed I was trying to poison her. My parents were appalled, she's their golden child, and called me an AH for putting pesticides on my food! So AITA for this? I might be because I knew her diet and did it anyway."

Why do they need extra locks? Are they raccoons?

57
CrazyhellgaI reserve my right to judge and be judged•

Because one is easy to pick?

I remember my cousin was obsessed with padlocks when he was about 13–14. After he spent his allowance on them he somehow convinced me to buy several locks with my money. That I kept in my house for years and had no use for. Funny now, thirty-some years later…

Is this person not aware that large companies have also figured out how to import international snacks and sell them at specialty grocery stores?

28
[deleted]•

No, they live in AITAland, where no immigrants are allowed to open stores and import things from their native countries, so they have to pay exorbitant fees to import snacks when they could just pay slughtly less for those around the world snack boxes. Or are those illegal too?

21
LVL-2197•

Cmon, they're all in NotAmericastan where those things are absolutely not part of the culture.

11
SinFurrArt•

Its funny because I've lived in quite a few countries (never the US though) and it's true, those kinds of imported snacks are very hard to get.. but there's an exactly 2% chance anyone could *afford* to import those themselves. Pretty much impossible. Either you have a company that imports to your country, or you have no access, there isn't any "ohh yea i bought from a Japanese website using Google Translate and then paid the insane shipping fees and import taxes just to get this pocky lol"

4

You underestimate weebs. The extreme ones do not care about the shipping fees as long as they get their anime girl limited edition wasabi soda.

It was this that gave it away for me. What 17 year old would cry for this? And pretty expensive? I can find a food locker for $12. Probably cheaper than importing snacks.

Glass-False"Fundamentally, the Chinese aren't black"•

Maybe so, but when you add in the two dozen padlocks OOP put on (he even drilled holes for them!), the price shoots up quite a bit.

17
Loud_Insect_7119•

That part killed me. What, does the OOP think the cousins are going to plan an elaborate movie-style heist on these snacks so top-notch security is needed? I'm surprised they didn't spring for biometric locks and an armed guard to watch over the snacks 24/7.

It makes me think of people who “know 10 languages” but what they mean is they can say a handful of phrases in a few languages, with varying pronunciation quality. Same people who travel to other countries and ~develop the local accent.

poppiesintherainIn MyCountry™ it is usual to do this•

Imagine going to your family's house, then going to the pantry yourself (which is fine for some people), you see lots of crisps and biscuits that your family are happy for you to help yourself to. But you think to yourself, I'm really in the mood for some Finnish candy right now, or maybe some Croatian dried fruit. So you say to your siblings, let's raid cousin's bedroom because remember she used to have flavoured KitKats, for sure she has lots of other goodies. Then they go into the room, rummage through her snack drawer which was empty - unless maybe she used to have the snacks elegant arranged on shelves. Despite being empty of snacks - they continue to look around the bedroom, find the chest and decide that the snacks are hidden in a chest, and then get angry and demand the snacks. Wifey thinks this is normal and totally reasonable that these cousins won't just eat the Pringles like everyone else in the world. Nope, Korean chocolate is what they need.

5
provocatrixless•

Sucks that OP forgot his character is supposed to be the 53 year old father. If only he remembered how to use words and be an adult before buying a locked snack chest.

My wife didn't do anything, saying that since our daughter kept them in the pantry they're for everyone.

I felt that up to this point this could be an interesting debate.

Then ofcourse the cousins turn into raccoons who sneak into her room purely to eat snacks for no reason.

Also a box and some locks can't be that expensive

In case this story gets deleted/removed:

AITA for buying my daughter a locked storage bin?

I (53m) have a daughter (17F) who I recently bought this big storage container for that locks. The reason being our daughter has a job and likes buying her own food and snacks for herself.

The problem is that her mom invites her aunt, uncle and cousins over all the time and even since she started buying her snacks and leaving them in the pantry they'd eat them without consulting her, she's asked them many times to not eat them but they don't listen.

For reference she likes to order snacks from other countries as a way to broaden her horizons, she's also linguistically gifted and liked to try and read labels to help expand her vocabulary. These snacks can take weeks to get after she orders them again and by then her current snacks are gone.

My wife didn't do anything, saying that since our daughter kept them in the pantry they're for everyone. She moved them to her room and her cousins would go in when she wasn't and take them.

I went to a hardware store and bought a big container with a lock and for extra measure I bought extra locks and drilled holes so that they could be used.

Our daughter cried and thanked me because it was pretty expensive and not something she could afford.

Of course the cousins went to get more snacks and threw a fit when they saw it and realized the snacks where in there. They told their parents and they told my wife and she's not happy with me, saying that our daughter should share her snacks with family and she's being selfish and will get fat.

Our daughter is incredibly fit, does multiple sports and exercises all the time, she's far from unhealthy.

I told my wife she could order her own and our daughter was happy to tell her where to order them but she didn't like that either and told her that the chest needs to go and that I should've consulted her on buying the bin in the first place.

AITA?

edit: the relatives are our daughters cousins and aunt and uncle. They are my SIL, BIL and Nephews, and SIL is my wifes sister to clear up any confusion

The pantry i also fully stocked with food, no one is going hungry and eating our daughters snacks because they have to
