These things will never stay clean until they're just 100% stainless steel that get automatically pressure washed every 3 hours or something
But can there be a delay if someone is using it? I'd hate to be using it and then get basically caught in a car wash!
It’s more fun than it sounds.

They'd stay clean if it cost $3.00 in coins to get inside, there was a strict 10 minute time limit, and the folks cleaning them got to keep any coins they'd accumulated. More dirty = more coins
there was a strict 10 minute time limit
There should be an "insert quarter to extend time" option for when being experimental for lunch backfires.
Agree :-P
I don't think the US is ready for pay to use toilets lol. But it's not a bad model
Either that or shit your pants.
I'd definitely pay to use a toilet if it meant it was unlocked and (very likely to be) cleaner.
Pay toilets are illegal in New York and many other U.S. municipalities.
That’s honestly so ridiculous especially given that that doesn’t lead to greater accessibility
Seriously? Why?
Make a bathroom cost more than the subway fare. Brilliant plan you've got there. I can't think of a better way to ensure that the stairs remain the bathroom of choice at subway stations.
I can: close the bathroom entirely
Ppl already pay that to get into the system.
I'm talking about a separate charge and one you can't just hop over.
3 minutes*
Go ahead and be cynical people but these are some HUGE baby steps to one of the city’s biggest failures.
I used a subway bathroom once when I just could NOT hold it at all. There was shit all over the floor and toilet seat. I couldn't walk into the stall at all, so I ended up pissing into the sink. I was forced to become a part of the problem.
At that point I’d just go into an abandoned lot and pick a corner
I was unable to hold it. I almost didn't make it into the bathroom.
Unbelievable that something as simple as operating functioning restrooms is beyond the capacity of the largest public transportation agencies in the country. It's not that hard, the rest of the world has figured it out.
The "rest of the world" figured it out by posting attendants who collect $ and clean it.
The "rest of the world" has it figured out by having civilized citizens.
Yes, just make it coin-operated and you solve a lot of problems.
You guys complain a lot as if it’s not the Publics fault. The MTA isn’t the one shitting on the floor and shooting up in the bathroom.
Most of the time, at least.

Thank you for your service.
In other news, unexplained cholera epidemic was traced to various subway stops…
Whatever the people get paid to clean these, it won't be enough.
That one in woodside saved my life one day after some bad Chinese in flushing lol
“Hooray!” said no straphanger ever.
I’d rather piss my pants.
Men’s room is going to look like that scene in the basketball diaries
i grew up in the city and live right outside of it now and to this day i thought restrooms werent open to the public (that was a 90s thing). Did not even realize this was a thing.
Am I the only one reading the times wrong?
About time, maybe we can all stop pissing on the ends of the platform now.
Open Franklin Av and Utica Av bathrooms for the 2,3,4,5!
Shit
Put bathroom attendants with a tip jar and the freedom to sell small toiletry items. When a dirty shitter means no tips, these brave men and women will bust down the doors of hell and drag Satan out if they have to.
Damn, just setting people up to get robbed on the hour every hour
Good. I don't care if they're disgusting and there's homeless in them, in an emergency they're far better than having to go in public or running around trying to find a store with a bathroom actually open and allowing people to use it before going in your pants.
Everyone gets an NYC miracle they can’t forget, and mine was an open, decently clean subway bathroom way out in Brooklyn without a lot of commercial above-ground options ahead. I was sweating, pale, and terrified that things may go Very Very Wrong soon while also trying to play it cool in front of my boyfriend, and when we turned the corner, there it was.
I think about that bathroom a lot and how this situation isn’t a rarity for many people.
I find it works really well when I go into a store and say "I will literally drop my pants and go since I cant hold it anymore" usually gets those doors open pretty fast
