Established a boundary and had a GREAT night !!!
My mom and I love watching stand up comedy. I bought 2 tickets for us to go see a show live. I thought about getting one for my dad too, but I decided against it. I knew how it would go:
He would make us late, argue with my mom and i in the car, pick the worst parking because he "knows best", and then after the show... complain that it really wasn't that good.
So, I resisted the urge. And bought 2 tickets.
Day of, dad threw a fit. "This is wrong, you shouldn't cut me out of the family". So dramatic. Nobody is cutting you out. We have one night of plans without you. Fucking get over yourself.
I told him clearly, "you are not going to ruin my night" he said "your night is already ruined!". Well. No it was not. My night was great. I dressed cute, mom and I got there on time, had a nice ride over, we got amazing seats, and we even stopped at Target on the way back. No arguments, no complaining, nothing. Perfectly pleasant.
My dad told me "you better never make plans without me again" ... LMAO I'm not listening to him. i will definitely make plans with my own mother again, if I find a nice event. She is my mom and I can spend time with her when I'd like, HOW I'd like. And there's not a single thing he can do about it.
The sad thing is-- a healthy, nice, normal dad would be happy for his wife and daughter to have a girls night out. A healthy dad would realize sometimes a daughter just wants to be with her mom. He is so insecure and self centered, he sees us spending quality time as a bad thing because "oh waaaaah i'm not included".
Anyways, just wanted to share! Have you established any boundaries lately?
