Changing expectations

Secondary

I’ve moved from one “Outstanding” school in January to another due to moving location. I’ll also preface this with that I held an SLT role at my previous school and decided to drop that at my new one. I’ve found that the new school has on a whole been a very pleasant experience but I find that sometimes my high expectations of what was “normal” at my previous school are not the standard expectations at the new one.

For a bit of context, my last school was an inner city school that had been taken from unsatisfactory to outstanding with a zero tolerance approach, not something I personally agreed with but I will admit it did work in that school. My new school is probably as close to a village private school as you can get without it officially being private. The school has been Outstanding for over 13 years.

I found in my old school I had to basically be robotic and tow the company line, being very harsh and expecting the exact same from every student (yet again, not something I agreed with personally but after 5 years of teaching that way it became my norm).

Now in my new school, a lot of behaviour is let go, uniform isn’t held to the same standards, there’s a lot of low level distruption and noisy corridors.

I want to integrate into the staff body as seamlessly as possible without ruffling any feathers.

Has anyone else made a similar switch and got some advice on how to adjust myself.
