Meta Quest 2 needs a 'full control' mode in the phone app

Discussion

When a lot of people strap on the Quest for the first time, depending on their age, they aren't very adept at the UI and getting around in the system. Being able to take full control inside the app would make it way easier to demo

I think it would be neat to be able to highlight areas on the UI from the phone and then display it on the Quest. I'm not sure what would be more useful than that.

Definitely shouldn't allow any camera control from the phone.

that would work too

Pico 4 can do exactly that which is neat.

At least a virtual laser pointer to show people the menu option they should be clicking.

Pico 4 can do that.

And that helps Quest owners how exactly?

To know that it is possible to do.

well good for them?

I agree. I’m a VR veteran and find Quest UI horrible and it’s so difficult showing people new to VR how to use it.

It's not their age, it's their experience (or lack of it). What you need is patience. Taking control would not help them gain experience, it just lets them have an experience.

Of course some people are just interested in trying it once. They are never going to try to use it again.

Use descriptions like "dots", "clock", and the colors of the other buttons to guide people around.

For buttons I use "grip", "trigger finger", "button at tip of thumb", "button and bottom of thumb", "and flat button".

It Would be fucking great

For real, or at least a way to cast to a tv by controlling it with the phone

Wait you can do that can't you?

If you can, three of us couldn’t figure out how which means it’s poor ui/ux. Not to mention it stops casting when you take off the headset. And burying casting under a camera icon is real dumb. I guess no one at Meta has read “Don’t Make Me Think”

At least a way to queue up videos for Youtube would be great.

This would be amazing, particularly a laser pointer type thing like pico 4 apparently has.

I've had moderate success simply casting to my phone or tv before handing the headset over, as I can talk them through it based on what they're seeing at least. But of course, casting is also super unreliable...

It is in a works for a long time already , from quest1 this feature was in some beta files , problems is it hard to do it right , right now we can recenter and start app and do some stuff

They should at first complete PC app, then go to phone

I don't think it has anything to do with age unless you are talking children.

Old people are less tech friendly, I know kids that barely walk that can open up youtube and watch whatever they want

1

BS, what do you consider old because my mother was 80 when she left this world and she was tech savvy. Most people on this forum would call me and my friends "old" but we are all tech savvy and all own VR headsets, game all the time etc.

Your anecdote is great but overall older people are less tech savvy (or at least tend to not keep up with new/emerging tech).

Young kids are inundated and know what symbols like three dots or a hamburger menu means in the same way that older people understand what the symbol for “save” actually means

Your mother was a rarity. Most people of that age have a fear of technology, and tend to convince themselves that they aren't going to be able to learn.
