2006 Subaru Impreza A/T with 144k miles : Transmission jumpy from stop -> 1st and other problems. Thoughts on torque converter.

A little background, I love to work on cars, but I've never spent much time trying to understand the inner workings of an Automatic transmission.

My 2006 Impreza is making lots of little transmission hiccups. Some harsh shifting from N -> 1 or 1 -> 2, bit of a rough idle while waiting at a stoplight, a couple times holding revs when I start to accelerated hard but then change my mind and let off the throttle.

I have done the standard maintenance, changed the trans filters, new fluid. Seemed to drive better for a little bit. Put in a little bit of an additive and it seemed to improve more, but temporarily,

I was wondering (as someone who tinkers), I know a bad torque converter can cause some bad transmission function. Has anyone replaced a torque converter before it has failed? Is this possibly a part that would improve quality of driving for a high mileage car?

It's a subaru. They got the sub part of the band correct. I'll just about guarantee you that it needs a transmission. Try Lucas trans fix, you have nothing to lose at this point. It might get you a few more miles.

Lucas trans fix was the 'additive' I already put in the trans.

I'm trying to see if someone here will say more than "it needs a transmission." That's the kind of comment I expect with an alternator, or a starter. There has to be something IN the transmission that fails. A solenoid, a friction pack, a torque converter.

Hopefully someone on here is a transmission specialist who has experience and can give more technical advice.

Okay, so you want to wait for someone to lie to you? Why? The pos needs a rebuild, including all internal seals, forward and reverse pistons, bands, clutches, and since it's been banging it probably needs some hard parts like the sprag and planetary pinion, etc. Ffs, it needs a transmission....

Guess I was just hoping for some education/information. NM

The education is that you have a car with known transmissions problems. it needs a transmission or transmission rebuild. No one can predict exactly what parts are needed until it's opened up and inspected.

You just got some. You just don't want to hear it. Nobody can tell you which part failed until it's gone through a tear down. But there's no more liquid in a bottle that's gonna fix what you've got going on right now.
