I understand why people don’t like Elon Musk, but that aside, is it okay to admire him for what he’s doing to slow down global warming?

Obviously he didn’t create Tesla, but he helped bring it to the scale it is at right now. They also make solar roof shingles and pretty solid battery technology. Why is he still hated in this sub?

I’ll admit I do not like his media/Twitter personality AT ALL but I admire him as an entrepreneur. He’s doing more to fight climate change than most other entrepreneurs and that has to count for something. Ignore the poor build quality and shitty FSD, I know. They’re still electric vehicles and not ICE vehicles. The point is that EVs have hit super high demand in consumer market and I think that is accredited to Musk.

I’m not sure if replacing cars with electric cars is the Panacea that everyone makes it out to be. Degrowth in some sense is what we need right now. More trains, public transport adoption, less private jets. I do agree with the solar home thing his company did. But I’m not sure that is “revolutionary” enough to be admired for.

Until he stops getting in the way of mass transit options like high speed rail I think I'll refrain. Don't get me wrong he accelerated the electric vehicle adoption rate, but much else for global warming remains to be seen.

I think that’s idea of Boring Company is to increase adoption of mass transit. Like someone’s gotta build these tunnels somehow

Tesla gets a huge amount of their money from selling carbon credits, essentially giving other corporations the right to do more polluting/emissions to make up for the emissions Tesla is not doing.

I give Tesla credit for creating efficient cars. But if you are attributing this to Musk… are you also going to criticize SpaceX for punch holes in the atmosphere more times that ever before? Heck the amount of pollution caused by his space port in Texas is huge.

He is not a climate change savior. He may play the part

Making cities designed for people rather than cars is a real start for the environment. Why not skyscrapers that have small chicken farms and other farms, sleeping, eating and gyms and work all in the same building we should have smaller commutes for people and livestock and fruits and vegetables. Working from home should also help the environment.
