Attended the live taping of the pilot episode for the reboot

It was incredible. I think the new plot makes sense and the actors involved add a new yet familiar feel. Jim Burrows directing. Kelsey got emotional as he introduced himself and welcomed us. Looking forward to the whole season!

I was there too and had a great time. I even got to bring a t-shirt back as a prize. It just says "Hollywood" on it but it's from the Frasier taping haha. I was pleasantly surprised with the episode and look forward to watching the full season when it comes out. It did leave me wanting more.

Was it funny in a frasier way? clever, intelligent, on the nose humor?

41
ersatz07•

It was… mostly. The “Frasier” character is obviously the same and great because I’m pretty sure that’s just Kelsey’s normal personality. He plays the character so well and naturally. The other characters are new or new in this setting and aren’t as filled out yet. I liked some more than others but the writing was very good throughout and the humor didn’t veer too far from what we expect from a “Frasier” episode.

I was there on Wednesday for the first run-through and the humor was brilliant, exactly what you would want from Frasier.

Honestly I think all the fears that the reboot (which Kelsey says it isn't, he thinks of it more as just the next season of Frasier) will suck can be dispelled. The new characters plug into the missing roles in a lot of ways but still bring a fresh take to the humor.

If you liked Frasier, you'll like Frasier. That's my impression of it, at least. I've been a fan of the show since 1993 and I loved it, fwiw.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been trying to temper my expectations because of my love for the original but this gets me excited. I was honestly dreading people on here coming back from a taping and saying it's horrible. You just made my week!

I was turned away at the door 😭 I was able to talk to some cool Frasier fans though so it wasn't a total loss.

Famous-Hall5662•

Should have waited in the cancellation line

80
Messyproduct•

We also joked about that. Every one of the people with a "preferred" ticket carried that air of arrogance. In jest of course.

37
ForGoodness-Cakes•

Did you have a ticket and got turned away? 🥲

We went to the first filming Wednesday and it was amazing!

18
Messyproduct•

Yep I had a general ticket for Friday's taping and showed up 2 hours early. I was 19th in line and didn't get in due to the amount of preferred and vip ticket holders. They told us paramount wanted the vip seats empty in case the vips decided to come sometime in the middle of the taping.

41
ForGoodness-Cakes•

That's really sad. I'm so sorry. I wish they would compensate you with priority tickets for another day at least.

23
Messyproduct•

They actually did give us priority for a viewing of "equivalent value" but since so few general people got in and all maybe 100 of us got the upgrade I'm not sure how my luck would fare for the next taping, or if it would even be the pilot.

king_england•

For a show that mocks social elitism, that is particularly lousy irony to experience.

16
bwoahful___We’re not Jewish! 😭•

That’s kinda surprising. I would’ve assumed they’d want a packed audience for more laughter. Also kinda silly to be a VIP for this and not show up lol.

13
Messyproduct•

We were told that there were 28 vacant vip seats, so yeah it kinda hurt.

What ate the demographics of "cool Frasier fans"?

That is terrible! How did you even get tickets?

I was there too and can honestly say that it was so much better than I'd ever hoped for. Really enjoyed it. The show has the same familiar, warm feeling to it, and is consistently funny and smart. I liked all the new characters too. A highlight for me was Nicholas Lyndhurst and it wouldn't surprise me if he became a fan favourite when the shows airs. Kelsey killed it as always.

Honest_Grade_9645•

I’m a big fan of Nicholas Lynhurst. He was in two Brit sitcoms that I love. Given his mannerisms and dry wit I think he will mesh well with Frasier on the show.

are you able to , without spoilers, give us a general sense of what the main setting is? is it his swanky apartment? university office? podcasting studio

4
europeanme•

We saw a few different settings, most of which will be used routinely, I believe. One of them is a bar, then Freddy’s apartment, another one I think would give away important plot and I haven’t seen anyone mention it on here, so I won’t. We didn’t see Frasier’s apartment during this first episode. They had a scene outside it, but never went in.

This marks the moment that I start to believe that the reboot is actually likely to exist.

bwoahful___We’re not Jewish! 😭•

Speculation (maybe informal announcement?) is that it will air in the fall schedule and debut in Sept/Oct.

I think Kelsey is hoping for earlier. A streaming service doesn’t really have to follow network seasons.

the fact that they have an episode in the bag, we can hope to see a slivery of some teasers in a matter of weeks!

Same! I'm glad those of you who got to attend a taping had a good time, and I'm appreciating all the positive comments from everyone as well. Gives me more reason to look forward to this reboot :).

So awesome to read good news and feedback about the new episodes. I feel terrible for all the people that didn’t get in on that first day though. It stinks. Total BS

Are you gonna tell us more?

Haven't they only just finished casting? How can they be filming already?

7
kylestokesdevOP•

Perhaps there are still casting decisions to make ahead for the rest of the season, I’m not sure. The filmed rehearsal for the pilot took place on Wed., Feb. 1, but the actual live taping for TV took place yesterday, Feb 3.

I can’t give away the plot, but I can say (in my opinion) that they’re doing it justice.

It’s an evolution of the Frasier story, but one that makes sense and as I mentioned feels fresh yet familiar at the same time.

It was such a massive moment to see Kelsey reprise his role as Frasier.

He still has the magic.

To hear Kelsey still has the magic is enough for me

They're literally not able to tell us more.

They just announced the casting - the filming dates have been set for over a month now. People attended the dry run on Wednesday as well.

6
Major_Owned•

Was it funny?

6
kylestokesdevOP•

I say yes while recognizing humor is subjective and polarizing. However, since we’re both on the Frasier subreddit I feel confident in saying you’d also find it funny given that it riffs off the same elements found in the original series.

Frasier erupting into flowery speech eliciting confusion in his less well-read interlocutor.

Kelsey harnessing that familiar (and almost condescending) gruff in his voice as he elongates a word at the end of his sentence.

The near naïveté displayed by a highly educated man trying to understand the dynamics of the average joe.

Those are my thoughts at least.

49
FraserCraneMD•

Thank you! Historic event for those interested in these things

5
OneMorePenguin•

I'm glad to hear three Frasier fans that approve of this. I would be interested to hear from anyone who attended who did not like it and what was lacking. No downvoting for people who don't like it. After all, we'll get to decide for ourselves soon.

5
grapenuts716•

I will never ever doubt Kelsey Grammar’s ability and, after this post, I’m a little more excited to see the show. But it’s hard for me to swallow the fact that there’s no Niles. Maybe if they’d convinced Bebe Neuwirth to play Lilith full time it could’ve filled that gap, and maybe they’ll manage to fill it with someone new. I’m open to it, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Two of my other favorite shows, Arrested Development and The Comeback, were revived. IMO, neither embarrassed themselves but they’re nowhere close to what they were. My empty guess is that Frasier will be exactly that. Hope I’m dead wrong.
