Anyone played around with the KNS diSCARder yet?

SCAR Accessories

Coming off a scarburator - didn’t quite live up to my expectations - and am obviously intrigued by the KNS. Didn’t know if anyone’s received theirs yet and could talk to its performance a bit

What was wrong with your scarburetor?

It didn’t feel consistent to me. I could try each setting and ejection would be the same. I’d go down a gas jet, get it somewhat tuned, then it would short stroke. Next mag on the same exact setting would be overgassed. It was just kind of all over the place. Maybe I got a faulty one. As has been pointed out, it’s a restrictive gas block - the SCAR OEM block is venting. Wondering if the SCAR just doesn’t play nice having the flow of gas into the piston restricted. But again, maybe I just got a bad one. I know a lot of people pleased with theirs, and Eddie is a great dude

I am Not sure how it could be a restrictive design unless the hole in the center doesn’t vent out. Unfortunately I have a Gen 3 on backorder. Eddie said it’s part of the last batch so it should ship within a few weeks. So I’ll be able to see it in person soon.

I do have his 3 select regulator and it is not restrictive. I can confirm it has a full open normal setting. Followed by 20% reduction and then another 20% reduction. I firmly believe this is all I need and the scarburetor is going to be more finicky and not really necessary.

FN also has a flash reduction stock regulator. However the one I received from FN had the suppressor setting hole basically the same as the normal hole. So there is minimal gas reduction. But they made the vent port thicker to reduce flash.

What do you mean you’re not sure how it could be restrictive? That’s the whole point of it. Instead of venting excess gas that comes through the jet (like the OEM does), the scarburator gradually occludes the gas jet opening, restricting flow to the piston. There is no (edit: way to control the) venting. I’m pretty sure the 3-position is restrictive, too. With each decrease in gas, the port allowing gas from the jet into the piston gets smaller, restricting gas flow. For the KNS, that port is always the same. They change how much excess gas is vented to atmosphere to control how much gas is getting to the piston. Fundamentally different mechanism

What I mean is I don't have the f'ing SCARBuretor Gen 3 in my g'd hands to f'ing look at how it works. It's been on f'in B/O for months. I placed my order November and its still in production. Mototech has been pumping these out in batches of like 100 at a time.

As for the 3-select, it is NOT restrictive. It's basically the OEM regulator, with 3 settings, but the 2 settings below full open are smaller. So you have Full, 20% reduction, 40% reduction. Mototech 3-select regulator: 0.108", 0.085", and 0.065" vent holes. Basically full setting, 20% reduced setting, 40% reduced setting. OEM regulator has 0.108” and 0.104” vent holes (4% reduction) while low-flash F141290020 has both holes at 0.105” (0% reduction). Only benefit is reduced flash.

Mototech's 3-select has kind of the same design as the flash suppressing regulator which a thicker extended port, but Mototech has not commented on the flash suppression capabilities.

The 3-select would vent excess gas straight out the front just like the OEM. So BLUF: 3-select is venting like OEM.

Now if I had the SCARBuretor Gen 3 in hand, I'd look at if there are any vent holes at the front. I see the shiny knob and that's about it from the photos.

FYI And in case it is TL;DR:

It's a similar venting principle as the stock OEM FN regulators and the Mototech 3-select. The KNS just vents the excess at the 1 o clock position while OEM/Moto 3-select vent forward.

I don't have my SCARburetor yet to comment. Eddie said mine was in the last batch to go out soon, I told him no rush - take his time with QC checks and whatever.

I ordered my KNS DiSCARder last week and received it today. There are 14 settings (0-13).

The part that sticks into the gas port measured 0.436" and the part that sticks into the gas port groove is 0.105"

The way it works is that it has a big opening that sits over the gas port of the barrel. As gas flows up through this opening, it flows into the piston chamber and goes into an inner chamber on the regulator (as the rest of the gas pushes at the piston). This inner chamber of the regulator leads to a triangular cut-out on the outer part of the regulator (looks like an inner sleeve is pressed in), and there are at least 3 tiny holes at this cut-out. So in the "0" position, this port is completely exposed and presumably ejects all excess gas out the 1'oclock position (when facing the rear of the rifle).

The knob spins both ways, you can go from 0 to 13 directly and vice-versa. At position 13, that triangular port is completely blocked. At position 12, just a tiny part of the port is open. Etc...

To me, this is still the same venting design as the OEM FN, OEM FN Flash Suppressing, and Mototech 3-select regulator: excess gas vents outside the piston chamber. On the KNS, it ejects out the 1 o clock position and anywhere else that is "leaky" like the sides of the regulator. On the OEM FN and Mototech 3-select, it can go out the front or the sides of the regulator.

I do not have my SCARburetor yet so I can't comment on its operation/flow.

I haven't played with one yet but it looks like a bleed-off design, not a restriction design. That's how the OEM part is designed but it means that on the "low" pressure settings, the gun is venting a lot of excess gas. My assumption is that it will flash at the vent and be loud. So for people trying to keep their signature low it might be a step back, not forward. But we shall see, maybe there is some magic KNS worked in there.

fusionvic•

Yes KNS Discarder appears to vent at the 1 o clock position (from shooter's perspective).

FN's mitigation for flash was to extend the vent of the OE regulator with a hood (looks like a thicker regulator).

Obviously piston is a different animal than DI, but I have significant time with Superlative Arms bleed-off gas blocks and have never had any sort of flash. I think I have seen a test on YouTube that found they’re very, very marginally louder but not really perceptible to the shooter. Again, DI, but I’d be curious how similar they behave.

For comparison the Bren 2 and the SCAR are known to flash at the gas piston vent.

I can vouch, I have videos of my old scar, g36,516 and 416 producing flash at the piston blocks

Hm. Never noticed that on mine but definitely see people talking about it now that I’m researching it. Thanks for bringing that up

I got my diSCARder the other day and have it setup with one of the gas jet they provide (you get three) but haven’t shot it yet. Feels better made than the scarburator which I do have and shot but needed to size down my gas jet with further testing for better results which I haven’t gotten to do yet.

Jay from PewScience just got a diSCARder as well and is going to provide updates on it. DiSCARder is supposed to vent like OEM and unlike the scarburator.

Mental-Resolution-22OP•

Yep, I just listened to jay talk about it today. Excited to hear his results.

I had to go down three jets sizes with the scarburator on mine when suppressed with a Hyperion K

Yeah I had planned to drop to a 1.2 and work my way back up with my Helio DT Ti but I’m just gonna try the diSCARder first with their 1.5 jet. Also Comes with a 2.0 and 2.5 so I’m assuming the venting does some work if it’s coming with gas jets in these sizes.

Mental-Resolution-22OP•

16 or 17 and what length barrel do you have?

1
gym_buddy•

17 with the oem 16in for now

What's your beef with the scarburator I'm still waiting on mine

2
slickrick324•

Looking at the KNS photos, it looks like there’s a large port on one of the sides that would get covered up as you twist for more or less gas. I think you’re going to still end up in a similar situation with port flash.

Mushybananas27•

Lmaoo you saying you didn’t like the scarburator got everyone on this thread shook😂

2
Mental-Resolution-22OP•

Yes, yes it did haha. Just one man’s opinion

I received my SCARburetor Gen 3 today so I can compare it with the KNS Discarder (posted below) and my Mototech 3-select.

The SCARburetor looks to be a restrictive design meaning the adjustment knob adjusts the main gas port (the one that sits over the gas screw). So 0 means its blocked off but the small holes around the perimeter are still functional. And setting 10 keeps the main gas port fully open.

The KNS discarder uses a venting design, so the adjustment controls how much gas vents out at the 1 o clock position (from shooter's perspective).

The 3-select works exactly like a stock regulator, but has 3 settings (Full, 20% reduction, 40% reduction)

What's wrong with the scarbuarator?

1
Mental-Resolution-22OP•

Responded to this above, but it’s just a little more finicky than I was hoping for. Perhaps I got a bad one, or it’s just not quite right for my use. Felt I was having inconsistencies with how much gas it was letting through. Just my personal experience, though. Obviously many people are satisfied with theirs. I’m also just interested in trying a different adjustment mechanism. Adjusting venting for the KNS vs adjusting restriction of gas from barrel to gas block for the scarburator

Curious as well, got 2 on order.

Wondering if this fits through the slot with a MI rail extension. The Scarburetor does not.

Gas jets homies.

I’ve also heard, using both.

Just ordered one my homies. Looked for a scarburetor forever but they always out of stock.

Got my discarder kit awhile ago just got around to putting it on my 10" what gas jet is a good starting place for suppressed and tuning wise what am i looking for? Ejection patterns?

Any further reviews on the two from anyone that has had them now? Considering switching to the discarder since my scarberator has yet to show up.

1
Mental-Resolution-22OP•

I got my diSCARder and love it. For me, it’s a noticeable improvement over the SCARburator, and I think that’s almost all due to the bleed-off/venting approach instead of restriction. Feels smoother for recoil, and adjustments feel a little more linear and consistent. I know these aren’t scientific findings, haha but the diSCARder just has a sturdier feel to it for me.
