Bad doctor or hopeless situation?
I'll try to keep it short. I was in a bad car accident 18 years ago. I lost most of my hearing in my left ear. I had a stapedectomy done 18 years ago. My hearing was lets say 80% (mild) and I have mild tinnitus after the surgery. I had my hearing checked 10 years ago and it was staying consistent. I went in last month to get a hearing test since I felt like it was getting worse. Well it is, now I am at the edge of mild/severe to severe at the higher frequencies. My ENT said the stapes is dislodged and needs to be fixed.
I went to the Neurotology specialist he recommended. It was at a teaching hospital. The resident took a look with a microscope said it was dislodged and resting on the TM membrane. The surgeon came in and checked my ear with the handheld scope, aggressively I might add. He said everything is fine and its not dislodged and I just have scarring. He said the surgery result looks like something he would do. The scarring is causing the hearing loss. If he fixes it then there will just be more scarring. I was told should just get a hearing aid and deal with it.
I asked if it was going to get worse and he said yes. I asked if my tinnitus will get worse and he said absolutely. When it does get worse he will do a surgery. I was pretty pissed when I left even more so when I saw the patient notes. Does anyone recommend a great surgeon in the Tri-state area?
Tympanic membrane left: HA ossicular prosthesis displaced and abutting TM posterior to malleus
Plan:
Discussed option of hearing aid amplification. No role in surgical revision given pattern of hearing loss on audio and mild conductive component.
