Any hospice chaplains have advice?

Hey all, I have an MA in Ministry and currently work administratively in a local church. I’ve just been offered a job as a hospice chaplain, but have a little fear about taking it. While it would be a good step out of my comfort zone, it would be very uncomfortable to be around that much death and dying all the time and would likely be a toll on my mental health.

I’ve been told by my spiritual director, friends, and family that it is a role I would be a great fit for since I’m great at listening, asking meaningful questions, and comforting others sometimes just by being a calm presence. I know it would be fulfilling and beautiful work, but it’s like no other kind of ministry I’ve ever done before. I was waiting to hear back from a pastoral position after doing a few interviews, and found out today that they aren’t moving forward with me. I was torn between that and this, could be God trying to lead me more towards this position.

Another possibly helpful detail would be that my wife and I are expecting our first child in just over a month, and I want to be as present as I can be at home as well, but it’s definitively time to leave my current job. The hospice company is willing to push my start date until nearly a month after the baby is born.

Any tips on how I can go about the decision making process or things I should negotiate for in the job offer? Or anything you wish you knew before taking a chaplain position?
