shining in the darkness

Has anyone else had issues with enemies in the cave of courage being insanely strong? My main character is level 17 and has the best armor I can buy, and clodhoppers and nightstalkers can 2 hit me, when everything else does 1 damage to me... wondering if it is the rom or everdrive pro causing the issue, but I have no idea
