AITAH for not wanting my parents input on my child’s education?
So I’ve always had a rocky relationship with my parents and I’m not sure if I’m being too sensitive because of that.
My son will be starting middle school after the summer and this morning my father, a college professor, sent my wife and I a text with some statistics on the school he’s slotted to attend. He followed this with the following,
“I was talking to David last night and he told me about the school he is going to go next year. I did a little research and I found out this school has a very low academic rating. Can we talk together tonight to see he has another option”.
I responded with, “Yes it has a low academic rating but he's in the gifted program, meaning extra funding and different academic curriculum and standards. I'm not sure what we would talk about”.
My wife also responded a more tactful and informative response about the program he’s attending, followed up with links on FAQs about the gifted program, how it works and what it means for the children that admitted to it.
After silence on his end most of the day, I assume he wasn’t pleased with our responses, he texts that we should consider moving to a better area with a better school system, or renting, etc. He basically ignored everything we shared with him and kept pushing his agenda, even going a step further by making financial suggestions.
AITAH for not wanting to map out my sons academic future with my dad? It’s not a conversation I want to have with him. I don’t think he needs to be involved in his education and I don’t appreciate him inserting himself in the matter. He was really overbearing with my own education as a kid and teen and even adult and really made me hate school for a while. I don’t want the same for my kid.
I guess before I tell him their isn’t a conversation to be had I want to get an objective view of what’s transpired. TIA.
