The US is providing Ukraine a long-range GPS-guided bomb made by Boeing Co. that’s capable of hitting targets 45 miles away, industry officials said.

The Pentagon hasn’t formally acknowledged it’s sending the modified version of Boeing’s Joint Direct Attack Munition, saying only it would send “precision aerial munitions” as part of a $1.85 billion package announced December 21. But two people familiar with the matter confirmed the weapon is the Extended-Range Jdam, known as the Jdam-ER. They asked not to be identified because the detail hasn’t been announced.
...
The Jdam-ER can be bolted on unguided bombs ranging from 500 pounds to 2,000 pounds. Once dropped, the bomb deploys wings, allowing it to glide up to 45 miles and tripling the range of the original weapon.

The extended range kits “will significantly increase precision firepower using available stocks of munitions,” said Rebecca Grant, an Air Force systems specialist and president of IRIS Independent Research. “I’d bet this is one of the accelerated proposals put in motion” by Undersecretary for Acquisition William LaPlante, she said.

Extended Range kits can be used “to attack Russian front lines or their second echelon rear areas in Ukraine,” Grant said. “Watch for a spread of firepower, including Jdam-ER whenever Ukraine wants to push forward.”

Boeing on Jan. 20 received a $40.5 million order from the Air Force under an existing Jdam contract. The job calls for completion by June 30. The award indicates the US and Ukraine have cobbled together a method by which Soviet-era fighter jets flown by Ukraine can program and launch the Jdam-ER.

The Extended Range Jdam joins Boeing’s new bomb-tipped missile, the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb, that’s demonstrated a range of 81 miles among the new weapons the Pentagon’s sending Ukraine announced this month.

Regarding the '45 mile range', it can only be launched that far when released from 35,000 ft, which Ukraine cannot do without risk of being targeted by AA.

Meanwhile Russia maintains 1,000+ mile buffer with their bombers launching cruise missiles.... Let's arm Ukraine so they can conduct offensive operations at MUCH greater range....

Now, this is a game changer.

It's a versatile, accurate, powerful, great weapon. But has its limitations. As a free flying bomb its maximum range depends on altitude, speed and angle it's released from an aircraft.

Flying at medium or high altitudes near the occupied areas is very dangerous due to dense air defenses, and using JDAM-ER to its full potential would require air superiority. Yet even if not game changer it's very useful weapon indeed.

45mile range is not a game changer.

It can destroy entrenched positions no matter how deep you dig. 500-1000kg of high explosive will do that.

This is not for hitting behind lines.

How are they going to launch it ? Either they know they soon have new planes, or its simply theatre, something even the most basic mobik can grasp.

The JDAM is just an add on kit for existing bombs. They attach it onto their bombs and turn from 'dumb' bombs into 'smart' bombs. They're probably pre-programmed with GPS co-ordinates and once released does its thing independently of the flight software and no need for hardpoint modifications.

However, if they're receiving pre-fitted JDAMs from US inventories, they are compatible with the same pylons that Ukraine used to attach the HARMs.

JDAM still needs data connection for its status and whereabouts before release. But it's not hard to develop that for the Ukrainian planes.

Are they actually important, aren’t these best when launched from high altitude, the one thing Ukraine can’t do.

9

It's true that for maximum range and effectiveness you need to be at high altitude, but they can fly low and fast approaching a front line then pitch up, releasing the bomb and letting it do its thing, much like they already do with rockets although with GPS accuracy and bigger boom. It's mentioned in this article.

The Ukrainian planes would fly low to minimize the risk of detection by Russian radars and, at the last second, pull up to give the GPS-guided bombs upward trajectory. The pilots could “turn tail while the bombs each autonomously fly to their targets,” Carlo Kopp, an analyst with Air Power Australia, wrote about JDAM-ER toss-bombing.

PuntHunter•

Wouldn’t that just be easier, cheaper and safer to use a HIMARS rocket or five.

4

Depends on the availability of the platform. You have to move a HIMARS system around. With a plane you can be a bit more flexible as conditions change and react to the theatre. Also a 500 pound JDAM has a bigger impact than the M31 rockets fired by HIMARS, let alone up to 2,000 pounds. So it would be useful for very entrenched and hardened places.

GMLRs rockets for HIMARS cost around $100k each and are limited by US stockpiles and production rates.

JDAM ERs cost around $25k each and essentially are just conversion kits for dumb bombs which are plentiful

Other factors go into cost such as operating costs of jets vs the HIMARS launch vehicle but surely availability is the biggest player here

Co$t is a factor.

A HIMARS rocket has 200 lbs of explosive. A JDAM can be 2000.

The problem with flying upwards is that you have to fight gravity to do it, reducing your max speed, even decelerating in high angles with full load and a lot of fuel.

But there's an alternative. Rise high further, get those radars active, launch some HARMs and JDAMs, dive as fast as you can.

Wondering the same thing.

The first wave would need to be HARM missiles launched from a western-model plane. Once the AA radar is eliminated, then these can be used to full potential.

6
ruttentuten69•

I think they re-engineered some of their Mig-29s to launch HARMs.

7
Shadey666•

Yeah but they are less effective without NATO guidance systems

2
Tailhook91•

Not really. Perfectly effective with proper mission planning.

It would be nice to see a swarm of drones carrying Harpoons ahead of and accompanying Typhoons carrying JDAMS. I wonder if they have available smaller cheaper drones that could precede the Harpoon drones but have the equivalent of a powerful transponder aboard to mimic a radar return for Russian AA batteries. They could waste a shitload of AA missiles even before the Harpoons and bombers arrive. I worked on a black (read - very black) program at Grumman in the 1980s. It was being developed as a manned/unmanned aircraft in the attack aircraft mission. Although none of the critical data of that project has ever been publicly released to my knowledge, without contrary orders or direction, I cannot discuss more of that program. I have never been "read out" of the program.

They should give them missiles that can strike Moscow. This would force Russia to move some of its air defense out of Ukraine to protect Moscow, thus making it easier for Ukrainians to strike enemy targets in Ukraine. It might also make the Kremlin think twice about raining down hundreds of missiles on Ukrainian cities with no military objectives at all, if they knew Ukraine could return the favour. It would likely save tens of thousands of lives of innocent civilians.

you can pre program them before takeoff get low and lob them into the area, Also good in bad weather
