Painting Alternate Skin Tones

As a white guy, I'm pretty lucky, most painting tutorials work great for me, I paint my guys as mostly "white" men. I just saw a gorgeous model with dark skin and thought it would be cool to give it a go, but I am worried about doing a poor job and then it coming across as racist.

Is this something you would give a go, or would you leave it for people of said racial backgrounds as to not cause offence?
