With Google dropping US Cellular, is there any longer a need for 'made for Fi' phone?

Since there won't be a need for network switching, any speculation if this will open up the ability to get MMS over WiFi on any phone as long as you have the Fi app and use Google messages? One of my biggest gripes with Fi is the poor choice of phones (yes you can get an unlocked with T mobile bands and be mostly ok). My problem with that route is not getting MMS when connected to WiFi...
