Do I need to play MGS2 before I play MGS3?

Like...I know people typically say to play in release order, but I cannot find MGS2 physically in a local store for the life of me. Also considering MGS3 is a prequel and comes first chronologically, would it be okay to play MGS3 before 2? Or would I still be missing out on a lot of references and such?
