Bank account fraud call scam? Almost fell for this one.
I almost fell for a scam today. Received a call, caller ID showed my bank’s actual phone number. Caller said that they were the fraud department and suspicious charges had been detected on my account ending in (he had the last four digits of my bank account). He asked if I had spent $125 and change at a Walmart in Austin Texas. I said “No, that wasn’t me” so he said he needed to verify my identity and I would receive a 6 digit code via text.
I received the code but noticed the text said “Mobil Wallet Enrollment Code”. I got suspicious and told him I would call them back to ensure this was legit. He said “you can just google the number that shows on your caller ID and see it’s your bank”. I said “Yeah, caller ID can be spoofed” I’ll call you right back, and hung up… called my bank back and they confirmed it wasn’t them and immediately cancelled my card and put a hold on my account.
Anyone heard of this scam before? I was so close to falling for it but luckily caught on,, how the heck did they get my number and bank account info? Only thing I can figure is from that Coinbase hack a while ago?
