Filter question

Is it possible to run a sponge a hang on back filter in the same aquarium I am wondering because I have a 20 gallon long tank and right now I have a sponge filter rated for 20 gallons but to my knowledge sponge filters only mechanically remove debree and my tank has tannins and I wanted to use activated charcoal which isn’t possible with just a sponge filter and I have a hang on back filter laying around it is only rated for ten gallons though.
