Finished the game and my take on everything that transpired
I played and finished both games for the first time these past few days.
Maybe not as much on this sub but in some other forums I've come across many people if not the majority that absolutely hated and despised the way the game ended. Personally I was completely satisfied with it. Not in the sense of what happened to the protagonists but from a story telling sense. If life has taught us one thing is that no one is ever guaranteed a happy ending no matter how much you deserve one.
I'd assume that the overlap of people that hated the ending and love Greek myths must be non existent. Orpheus and Euridice, Jason, Icarus, Hercules, Achilles, Ajax, Oedipus and so many more. All of those either had a very tragic outcome or in all their actions to change their fate ended up inadvertently fulfilling it making it all futile. Hell I'd probably say endings like APT are more the norm through human history story telling rather than our typical expectations nowadays of a "Hollywood ending". So many people have loved those stories and have done so through the ages.
I do like how the first time you experience the "dream", the tomb of Basilius etc you have emotions of hope, optimism, that knowing what had happened to Basilius will guide you into setting a different path than what he was set in. And when you finish the game you realize that what you were shown was not a way to salvage yourself but merely shown your future. And Hugo starts to realize that his nature brings death and destruction whenever he goes, starts to lose hope and doesn't want to live on this way but Amicia has a hard time accepting this and keeps clinging to even the slightest hope and refuses to give up.
Hugo was innocent... he was naive... but he was also doomed from the day he was born... and at the end.. he was ready to let go if it meant to keep the world he just barely started to experience and love, if it meant that it was the only way for that world to live on... it's sad... it's tragic... it's unfair.. and that's.. fine..
p.s an interesting fact for those that might not know the word Basilius in Greek (widely spoken during the Justinian times) means King. It's a nice connection with how "King" Hugo is something that comes up often during various points in the games.
