Probable XIs:

1st: Allen, Bowes, Young, Latham, Mitchell, Phillips, Bracewell, Sodhi, Henry, Ferguson, Tickner

2nd: Bowes, Blundell or Nicholls, Young, Latham, Mitchell, Chapman, Bracewell, Sodhi, Henry, Shipley or Lister, Tickner

Notable omissions:

Martin Guptill: makes sense from a practical perspective since he isn’t really going to have much of a role in the team going forward, but it’s sad that he doesn’t get a farewell series at home. That’s probably it for him in international cricket then.

James Neesham: this one is interesting. I think perhaps that he’s just been dropped.

Adam Milne: also surprising, but the right call imo.

Other notes:

Once again with Guptill we see that the policy appears to be evolving into ‘if you don’t have a central contract you won’t play’, although perhaps Guptill has simply not been selected based on form.

Chad Bowes is going to get a pretty long run with the Pakistan ODIs after this. Allen should be nervous about his World Cup chances. Likewise Glenn Phillips, if Mark Chapman really performs then Phillips may find himself out of the starting XI, although he’ll probably still go.

Stead straight up said that Blundell is being picked for his red-ball form, lmao. That may be true, but it also means that perhaps the converse of ‘if you don’t have a central contract you won’t play’ is true - if you do have a central contract you will play, even if it isn’t your best format. That would be a slightly troubling development if so. I’m not looking forward to watching Finn Allen open in tests if Latham or Conway is out, lol.

We seem to be an opener short for the 2nd and 3rd games. I suppose it’ll be either Blundell or Nicholls. Blundell I can understand, even if I don’t necessarily agree. Nicholls I don’t really understand.

I'm strongly in favour of Guptill having another short run. Finn Allen is obviously the 'chosen one' (I remain dubious) but he's still raw and I feel he could learn a lot from playing alongside Guptill for a series or two.

tarvisscooter:New_Zealand_Cricket: :Mace_flair: New Zealand Cricket•

They're both pretty average at this point in time imo. After that Indian series you could see you don't really need a Finn Allen type opener as it's quite easy to get of to a flyer if you're just a good batsmen (Flat pitches, small boundaries, super quick outfields).

Will Young is the only one of the outsider batsmen in this squad I feel can really challenge a 1st XI spot. But he's not an opener.

Someone here during the India series suggested opening with Mitchell and using Young at 4 which I really like the sound of. Mitchell has struggled for tempo getting bogged down against spin in the recent series in Asia but is still 100% one of our best batsmen, so I think he could do a job opening like he did in the T20WC.

We can use Young at 4 where at his best he kinda goes at 90-100sr without noticing. He is also a good player of spin imo. The only issue I think the selectors could have would be wanting more power to take the game away from opposition than a Kane-Young-Latham middle order.

Where the fuck is duffy

Samuel_L_Johnson:New_Zealand_Cricket: :Mace_flair: New Zealand Cricket•

A fair question. I really hope he hasn’t been perma-dropped on the basis of a single match in India where he got hit.

crashbandicoochy:New_Zealand_Cricket: :Mace_flair: New Zealand Cricket•

Seeing as Shipley is still there, I don't think they're judging too hard about that nasty tour. I think it's just that, with Matt Henry fit again, they could only retain one of them and they think Shipley projects better.

Duffy is one of those guys who feels like he should be really good but the people who work with him in the nets every day just aren't seeing eye to eye with us. We have a lot of those guys in rugby but it's weird to have them in cricket too.

1
RMTBolton:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

Should hopefully be leading the New Zealand A bowling attack against Australia A (I think they've avoided picking players who might be involved in that team).

1
CricketKieran:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

But why is Duffy playing for the A team and not international cricket when the big name players are away? If he's the next big thing for swing bowlers, why the hell isn't he in the side right now? Get him in there and get him some proper international experience. If he's not in the T20 side for Sri Lanka, serious questions must be raised over whether the selectors actually want him or not. They've completly turned their back on him. Despite saying he's the future, they are complelty throwing him away in preference of others who haven't shown the capabilities he has. Is it northern districts bias or purposefully avoiding Otago? Or is it that 1 bad performance against India when everyone else did bad was enough to kick him out completly, when it hasn't been enough to kick Tickner or Nicholls out? Have they compeltly fallen out of favor for him like they did with Ferguson in tests and Tom Bruce, who should have been given a few more goes. Or is it they want Kugglijn ahead of him and prefer older guys who will never play again. Is it that they see him as a red ball specialist from now on? How do you select Lister and Shipley but overlook Duffy and Randell? These selectors are the most bias and braindead people I may have ever seen involved with sport. Lister is a rising talent, but is he better than Duffy? Is Shipley better than Duffy. Personally, I really don't think so. I feel Randell is better than both of them, but it's crazy to think that Shipley and Tickner will end up having bigger careers than Randell and Didfy likely will Despite Duffy and Randell bring so much more to the side. At that point, if he's going going pay international in the future, he shouldn't be playing for NZ A when a spot is open for him in the top team. Instead it's going to Tickner, whose is 3 teirs below Duffys ability. God I hate these selectors.

That being said Bowes getting an opportunity is 3 years overdue. Good to see him finally get picked. And blundell being recalled is good too. Lister is up and coming and in glad he's there, but over Duffy or Randell. That's a no no for me. And Tickner is just ugh. They really want him to suddenly become good

The virgin Martin Guptill vs the chad Chad Bowes.

Really nice to see Chad Bowes in the squad as reward for his recent domestic form. Nicholls a surprise - can’t see him being anywhere near the ODI World Cup squad so would have preferred to see him go back to Canterbury to try to recapture some form.

Looking at ODIs 2 and 3 I'd probably guess it will be

1: Nicholls

2: Bowes

3: Young

4: Mitchell

5: Latham

6: Blundell

7: Bracewell

8: Sodhi

9: Lister

10: Henry

11: Tickner

But it's difficult because there's so many fill ins here,

Otherwise I'd also say this is probably the squad for the Pakistan tour as well.

Sad thing is that ODI squad even with all the IPL guys gone by ODI 2 has no one under the age of 25 that could debut and most likely will be the same in Pakistan. Disappointing.

3
RMTBolton:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

Personally, I'd rather the younger players play the New Zealand A series against Australia A that'll be around that time. Now, of course, the likes of Rachin, O'Rourke, Ashok &co need to get into that squad.

4
SavingsPale2782:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

Mmm not the SL ODIs though, the Pakistan series will overlap for sure.

2
RMTBolton:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

There's also the SL T20s as well. We still don't have dates for the A series, but I'm guessing they'll happen after the end of Plunket Shield (which is ending early this season to accommodate it).

2
SavingsPale2782:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

Thinking about it this means Finn Allen has literally 1 game left to prove he's not a walking wicket before the world cup squad is finalized in that England CWC warm up series. It's a dam shame so may players are sacrificing 8 ODIs and 8T20Is for the IPL. Especially since some badly need runs on the board

3
The_Real_Will:Canterbury_Kings: Canterbury Kings•

Chad Bowes let's gooo. I'm biased but Bowes is more reliable than Allen even if Allens best might be higher. Will be interesting to see how some performances here change the world cup squad. if Bowes or Chapman have themselves a series I can see them starting in the world cup

Bowes is also an incredible Guptill replacement, even down to the fielding. Bowes is right in the running with Glenn as our best fielder, he's an absolute weapon in the field

It's OVER for the rest of you.

2
RMTBolton:New_Zealand: :Mace_flair: New Zealand•

At least they get to play 1 ODI (Kane excepted).

Great to see Chad Bowes has recovered enough to get picked. If he gets a run through to the Pakistan series & does well, he could push Finn Allen out of the WC squad.

Other than that, pretty predictable. I really hope we sweep this 3-0. I really want NZ to top the Super League.
