Constant Disconnect

What router should I buy for a best-case ideal Shelly connectivity experience? Devices just don’t stay online and every day I’m resetting something. No pattern aside from 1 device that actually is in a poor area for reception.
Ideally I would buy whatever router Shelly is testing against to remove any potential router issues. This would be dedicated for just Shelly devices so there are no other considerations.

I get all the usual Shelly stuff, lighting in infinite reboots, sockets hard locking, devices rebooting causing other devices to start looping, yada yada. I need whatever “the” vendor recommendation is so I don’t continually get the expressif WiFi bug run-around. None of my other expressif devices act like this.

EDIT: Actually I do get this behavior on the v0 esp8266 chips, I doubt shelly is saving a cent by buying chips not intended for sale.

This resolved that issue for me for constant HA unavailable issues.

Under Internet and Security in the Shelly device settings. Advanced - Developer Settings. Enable CoIoT , CoIoT peer: enter Home Assistant ip here.

I’m just using Shelly cloud at the moment. It’s not that the devices have issues with communication, they segfault. It sounds like bad power regulators to me but the WiFi gets blamed so I’m looking to eliminate that excuse.

Shelly needs, above all, a good, stable 2.4GHz WiFi signal.

That is typically achieved with a wireless distribution system with multiple APs (like Ubiquiti’s UniFi system) and not with a router with a single point AP incorporated.

Just for your reference, my system has 4 APs inside the house, 3 outside and the ISP router wifi is turned off to avoid interference.

I’m shocked that a mesh works at all, very interesting. There is a fair amount of interference but the devices are all within 15ft of router now.

Currently I’m on an old WRT54 located near the devices with 40-50dBm but it’s only been a slight improvement over the 55-65dBm when using the general purpose router downstairs. From a wireless perspective mesh would be a downgrade for me (low footprint) but I’m willing to try anything at this point. Given that these don’t need throughout my only real concern would be the levels of interference from a tightly clustered mesh system.

Actually, it is not a mesh network (although it can be set like that in some links), but rather a wired network with several APs broadcasting the same 3 SSIDs (one master, one guest and one IoT network) and a simple controller managing the transitions between APs.

Each AP is transmitting the same set of SSIDs but in different channels to increase coverage while decreasing interference.

I shouldn’t have any of the issues that would avoid as channels do not change but I’m going to try that out. It would skip a lot of code paths if it just decides to connect to a different network instead of renegotiating.

Thanks! Definitely missed this idea in troubleshooting.

No dice. The problem devices still have the same crash rate and the stable ones now crash more.

Do you use fixed channels for the 2.4 GHz band?

How many IoT devices are you using? Are they evenly distributed between the several APs?

How congested is the 2.4GHz band?

What is the reported signal strength of those devices dropping?

I had lots of connection issues with the first Shelly I bought. It used an esp8266 board. I have since purchased 3 Plus boards with esp32 and have had 0 connection issues. I have 2 ax6100 Asus in auto mesh mode. The 8266 would stay connected for 2-12 hours and randomly disconnect. Interestingly I discovered it would still send info to HA but couldn't receive.

It is mostly esp8266 devices with 1 x 8266 and 1 x esp32 being rock solid. Loath to add any given my experience but would be interesting to track them by device in troubleshooting.

Mine segfault which is a bit different but I’ll keep that in mind for an H&T that’s started acting up recently. That one doesn’t segfault AFAIK but I’m not sure exactly what it’s doing.
