Lullaby of the Sun and the Moon
One night, the sun whispered something to the moon.
He said, “I love you.”
Shocked, she stared.
“How long have you thought about this?” She questioned.
“For a few days—but as the rain came down this afternoon I realized I did love you.”
She gazed at his brightness, puzzled. She didn’t think anyone could love her; she was just the moon. There really wasn’t anything special about her.
Another night, the sun whispered something else to the moon.
He said, “I see a future with you, Moon.”
Shocked, she stared.
“When you say future—what do you mean?” She questioned.
“I don’t know,” He said. “All I know is when I think of it, you’re by my side.”
After that, he quietly drifted beneath the sky. She was left alone staring into the black. Her glittery eyes reflected the night sky and onto the stars who waited for the sun's return and reveled in the way he spoke.
He was so endearing.
She didn’t understand what he meant by all this talk. She spent many months thinking about him and his brightness. She saw herself in him and wanted to align with him forever.
But, eclipses are few and far between.
Eventually, the sun always leaves the moon. He drifts beneath the sky and never returns, there is no sunset to invite the moon to rise. Ultimately, she gets left in the darkness and turmoil that the night brings. There was no brightness in her life anymore— not even the stars could light her path because they too had gone out— a supernova of grief and anger.
She wept more than she ever did. She shrouded the world in darkness and turned the tides.
For she would never love again.
(apologies this is so long. i wasn't sure if it fell under a poem or flash fiction. i think a poem is a good conclusion though lol. more specifically, it reminds me of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. enjoy either way! )
