Henleaze Lake, myth?

Wife is a outdoor swimmer and has been looking to join for years, problem is they are near on impossible to get into! Long waiting lists, no trial days etc.

Has anyone here any advice on getting access to the place other than waiting for the stars to align or paying extortionate fees? Also, is it even that good to swim in? It's not exactly easy to access to I don't know if the hype is that aspect or simply the fact it's so elusive.
